The flipside of innovation, knowledge and progress

Prometheus - the bringer of cosmic fire, innovation and collective urge for evolution. This myth comes to my mind, when observing the collective information flow these years.
Throughout the ages humans have had a drive to be liberated from the bonds of nature through human intelligence and will. An urge which has brought great progress and innovation, both technologically and mentally. But is all progress good?
Evolution of human consciousness comes with a certain responsibility - what we end up creating, will colour our worldview and build a structural frame for our reality, sometimes leading to building castles in the air, lacking a true foundation of reality for what is needed in the long run.
It is easy to become seduced by new discoveries, as to how much we can control and create with our modern intelligence and technical inventions, and these years I believe, we will see an even bigger expansion of technical innovation, but history has shown us, that our excitement about innovation, will lead us to experience the shadow side of things.
The fragmentation of humans from nature, perceiving ourselves as apart from nature, not part of nature, has brought with it great consequences, as to how we treat our environment as an object, that can be exploited for our own interests. A dichotomy which has led us to act in ways we would not, if we understood, that humans are not separate from nature, but is part of the same living matrix of life - a matrix created from the same building blocks, eternally connected through atoms and an invisible lifeforce. A dichotomy we know from Descartes and a clear move towards being driven by rational thinking, rejecting our connection to the whole, and reducing us to be rational, cognitive beings - I think, therefore I am.
Recognizing that disconnection, will help bring us back to an understanding of how systems are intertwined in deeply complex forms and patterns - a myriad of parts supporting a whole, a resilient web of life, where all parts are playing a crucial role for making the whole system exist. A coherent web, where there is a constant flow of information and energy running through the whole ecosystem in a nonlinear way.
But how are natural patterns and ecosystems connected to the modern human being and society? Re-training our literacy in pattern recognition, will quickly make us see how that web of life, is applied everywhere, from our bodies as a myriad of parts connected to a whole organism, through organization structures of companies and city infrastructure, to economic cycles and systems. Resilience is built on recognizing whole systems thinking and treating both part and the whole, as living parts making a strong foundation for long-term growth and healthy expansion.
Systems thinking does not negate growth being prioritized, on the contrary, healthy growth and expansion is encouraged by understanding the underlying mechanisms of the ecosystem of e.g. an organizational structure.
Human beings have a tendency towards going to the extremes to learn, that there is an inevitable flipside, the two-edged sword. In a decade or two, we might have turned around in a countermove, because we discovered how much new inventions and technological progress, is not always a helpful tool for growth, if we don’t treat it mindfully and with respect for the damage, that can be done, when we throw our ability to see the whole picture under the bus.
The acceleration of how fast we develop new technologies, will undeniably force us to reflect upon our direction and our methods to progression. The recent focus on the massive use of water needed to run our AI/tech industry is making us put question marks as for, how sustainable it is in the long run. We hear about HR and recruiters, who cannot tell the applicants apart from each other, because AI has made their applications to perfection for the job applied, but who is the real person behind that application, when everyone can use AI to write a picture-perfect resume? How does it affect our worldview and connection to our environment? What is real and what is fake? How do we keep using our own senses and ability to critically reflect and navigate through the massive amount of information? A lot of questions pop up with the enormous speed of new tech inventions.
So how do we navigate in a time where we must find a way to balance our individual values with the collective drive towards progress? My best bet would be to use whole systems thinking - connecting the parts with the whole. Making sure the collective drive towards expansion, does not come with the price of negating the wellbeing of our nature and the individual uniqueness as a gift to the collective complexity.
